The Humanities  Department of Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania is happy to announce that it is organizing the fourth international conference on imagology to be held in Miercurea-Ciuc, Romania on 19-20 April 2013. Co-organizers are the Romanian Comparative Literature Association and the Doctoral School of History and Ethnography of the University of Debrecen. The conference will host presentations delivered in Hungarian, Romanian and English (also in the virtual panel). The main focus will be on the historical and temporal aspects of the images of ethnic, national, religious and cultural otherness. Topics will be related (but not restricted) to: imagology and interculturality, imagology and crisis awareness, the transformation of national myths, self-myths and distorted images of nations, stereotypes in ironical reading, the East’s image of the West and vice versa, the alterations of images of nations in works in the domain of history, in the media, the formation of images of nations in film, imagology – bilingualism – linguistic landscape.

Topics proposed for the lectures:

–  The indispensability of stereotypes and prejudices in the Gadamerian sense and the risks of their unreflected use.

–   The theoretical significance of the distinction between nuanced, flexible opinion formation and biased thinking.
–  Do the images of otherness change, and if yes, how?
–  What images of otherness do historical sources transmit and how does historiography use these sources?
–  What stereotypes characterise folk consciousness and image of others?
–  What ethnic stereotypes appear in education?
–  What stereotypes does the media use?
–  What is the role and responsibility of literature and art in promoting stereotypical thinking or nuanced images of otherness?
–  What possibility does imagology create for a critical approach to the image of nations?
–  How does multilingualism influence the image of otherness?
–  What is the role of imagology in the system of cultural studies?

Please express your intention to participate by filling in the registration form until 25 February 2013. We will inform you on acceptance and information for authors no later than 18 March 2013.

Registration fee is 25 Eur / 100 Ron, to be paid upon arrival in Ron (or, for participants of the virtual panel, together with your study until 19 April 2013, in Eur or Ron).
