Unity in Diversity – project meeting in Latvia

Between April 27 and 29 April, the 3rd meeting of the Erasmus+ project entitled ”Language skills and intercultural issues in the hospitality industry: unity in diversity in the EU labour market” took place in Riga, hosted by Turiba University, where Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania was represented by Dr. Zsuzsanna Ajtony and Zsuzsanna Dégi. More than twenty colleagues from 9 European partner countries took part in the meeting.

The meeting had a packed schedule this time as well. On the one hand, we surveyed and evaluated the work done in the past three months since our Vilnius meeting and we also planned the tasks for the next period. As we have already reported, an English language learning material is being designed and uploaded on the interactive e-learning platform of the project ( for staff working in tourism and hospitality industry. Another aim of the project is the creation of an A1 (elementary) level learning material designed in 16 European languages. A part of this elementary material is to present typical conversations taking place at the reception of a hotel and in a restaurant with short videos. During the workshop of the meeting, these typical conversations were created in English which were used as scripts for the videos shot where the partners themselves played the roles. Similar videos are planned to be created here at Sapientia University as well, but this time in Hungarian and Romanian. These videos can be used in the future by those who would like to learn these languages as a foreign language. The project partners also discussed how these materials will be piloted at later stages of the project.

This project meeting gave us the opportunity to experience the Latvian architecture and international and local cuisine. On the last day of the meeting our colleagues from Riga took us on a sightseeing tour of the city during which we also visited the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation. Despite the unpleasantly cold weather we also took a trip to the Sigulda region, one of the most beautiful regions of Latvia.

Many thanks to our colleagues from Turiba University for their warm hospitality and for the rich and entertaining programme. We continue the work in the project and hope to see our friends in the Czech Republic!
