The Department of Humanities, Faculty of Economics, Socio-Human Sciences and Engineering, Miercurea Ciuc, the Intercultural Confluences Research Center, Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania, Romania, organizes the International Conference Discourse, Culture and Representation III in the Miercurea Ciuc campus of the university on 21-22 April, 2023. The working languages of the Conference are: Hungarian, Romanian and English.
At the dawn of modernity, Giambattista Vico and Herder formulated the idea, also applied today by contemporary theoreticians starting from George Steiner to Davin Damrosch and Jacques Derrida, according to which self-knowledge can only be reached through observing others and that different languages and cultures influence each other in a positive way.
The aim of our conference is to bring together researchers from different fields of the Humanities (Literature, Cultural Studies, Film Studies, Linguistics, Discourse and Conversation Analysis, Pragmatics, Sociolinguistics) to exchange their findings and to foster further collaboration and exchange of ideas related to the concepts of discourse, culture and representation.
The terms “discourse”, “culture” and “representation” can be interrelated in a variety of ways; the conference aims to invite papers that address cultural phenomena (culture and identity, interculturality, cultures in transition, translation and cultural transfer, exchange of ideas, border-crossing, intercultural exchange, bilingualism, multilingualism) and discuss the ways in which they are rendered in terms of their discursive aspects. Papers that disseminate research findings on literary connections and intercultural transfers, on the literary and cultural values of Eastern and Central Europe, also considering linguistic aspects, are especially welcome. Each paper will be allotted 20 minutes for the presentation, followed by discussions. The programme will also include a virtual panel. We are going to stream the planery sessions and online presentations on the virtual platform.
