Call for papers 2024

The Intercultural Confluences Research Centre of the Department of Humanities, Faculty of Economics, Socio-Human Sciences and Engineering, Miercurea Ciuc, Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania, organizes the International Conference Encounters in/among Language, Literature, and Arts at the Miercurea Ciuc campus of the university on 22-23 March, 2024. The working language of the conference is English.

“How one encounters reality is a choice” – setting out from Martin Heidegger’s idea, and on grounds of Jacques Rancière’s rethinking of the “representative regime” that enfolds the threefold relation between mimesis, poiesis and aesthesis, the conference proposes to explore the ways in which the singularity of disciplines and art forms has given way to the plurality of their connections. It aims to explore possibilities and various meanings of cross-disciplinary encounter in the Humanities, with special focus on manifold transitions, passageways within and among the fields of language, literature, and arts. Encounter implies motion, correlation, transformation, cross-fertilization; it presumes partnership, collaboration and affective impulses to interconnect but also entails tensions, frictions and clashes of difference. The encounter with the Other and, through it, with oneself, often takes place at crossroads, junctions.

Proposed topics include but are not limited to encounters with/within/across:

  • artistic, generic, cultural, ethnic, linguistic, discursive and political boundaries;
  • literature and the other arts (words and images, ekphrasis, theatrical and screen adaptations, literature and music, literature and performance, from paragone to symbiotic confluences, etc.);
  • intermediality;
  • multimodality;
  • identity and otherness;
  • literature and myths;
  • the linguistic and the social (bi- and multilingualism; linguistic landscape etc.);
  • language contact;
  • language change;
  • language and literature (translanguaging, pragmatics, stylistics, etc.);
  • the social and the aesthetic regimes;
  • the analogue and the digital;
  • theory, criticism and research methodology.

Participants are invited to exchange their findings related to the concept of encounter in the following fields:

  • Literary Studies (Literary Theory, Literary Criticism, Literature and the Other Arts);
  • Linguistics (Applied Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Psycholinguistics, Historical Linguistics, Comparative Linguistics);
  • Film Studies;
  • Cultural Studies;
  • Intermedial Studies;
  • Language Teaching;
  • Translation Studies.

 The conference will be on-site and will also include online panels. The keynote lectures will also be transmitted online.

Each paper will be allotted 20 minutes for the presentation, followed by discussions.
