CALL FOR PAPERS
The Department of Humanities
Sapientia University, Miercurea-Ciuc, Romania
is happy to announce the conference on
DISCOURSE, TRANSLATION
April 11-12, 2014
After “consciousness” in the nineteenth century and “language” in the twentieth, “translation” can be considered to define the contemporary ethos. The multiplicity revealed through the act of translation is doubled by the multiplicity of meanings attributable to the act itself, making interdisciplinary approaches necessary. (Nouss 2005)
The study of translations as facts of target cultures means to investigate translation in its correlation with the situational and sociocultural context, as communication in context, an enterprise which necessarily requires the collaboration of other disciplines such as Linguistics, Text Linguistics, Discourse and Conversation Analysis, Pragmatics, Sociolinguistics, but also Literary Theory, Anthropology, Sociology, Cultural Studies, Semiotics, History, Philosophy and Cognitive Psychology, among others. Our conference aims to become a forum that would bring together scholars and researchers working in these fields to have an interdisciplinary view of translation, taken as an act of (literary, cultural, linguistic, etc.) mediation, as a method of “crossing boundaries with an awareness of differences” (Bachmann-Medick 2008).
The conference will embrace parallel sessions held in English. Each paper will be allotted 20 minutes, followed by discussions. We welcome paper presentations that explore topics in the following areas, but are not limited to:
