Conference Board and Organizing Committee
The Department of Humanities of Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania, under the auspices of the Romanian Society of Hungarology and the Romanian Association of General and Comparative Literature,organizes an international conference entitled Homo viator in two venues: in the Miercurea Ciuc campus of the Sapientia University on 24 April 2015, and in Sf. Gheorghe, in the building of the Covasna County Council on 25 April. The languages of the conference are Hungarian, Romanian and English.
Travelling is one of the determining topoi of European cultural consciousness. While Gilgamesh’sand Odysseus’ journeys follow well-defined aims, the “dialectic travelling” of Platonic thinking already carries a metaphoric meaning. Dante follows the paths of the other world in search of the accomplishment of human personality and of the order of the world; the concept of progress in modernity is linked to travelling in a metaphorical sense, similarly to deviation characterizing Foucault’s thinking. The journey takes us from somewhere, and leads us to another place. Understanding is achieved by transgression from a narrower towards a wider horizon.
On the occasion of this conference we would like to honour the memory of the great Hungarian scientist and traveller Sándor Bölöni Farkas, born 220 years ago. We expect presentations related to the topic of travelling in English, Hungarian and Romanian. The topics may be related but not restricted to:
- travelling and languages, the questions of multilingualism; the dilemmas of cultural transmission; the experience of interculturality;
- travelling and gaining experience; ways of understanding;
- transition emerging in time and space structures; inner journeys;
- interaction between cultures; images of alterity, images of the other / foreigner;
- borderline existence; in-betweenness; reflections of the self and the other in literary / artistic creations.
